Latest News from Ateaseweb.com

"Thom (Yorke) will be doing an acoustic set at Electric Lady studio in New York City on Wednesday June 4th. Listen all weekend K-Rock (NYC) and when you hear Radiohead be the 92nd caller to win your way in along with a pair of tix to their Beacon Theater show."

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I just got back from

I just got back from mailing a DVD to someone that bought it off me on eBay.

While I was out I once again went in search of the new Radiohead single. I went to three separate stores and none of them had it.

One conversations I had with the guy in the store inside the mall:

Me: Do you have the new Radiohead single?

Guy: No, the new CD is coming out in a couple weeks, but they're not releasing a single.

Me: Um, I'm pretty sure they are.

Guy: *Walks to the 'singles' area to look so he can prove me wrong* (His coworker is punching it into the computer)

Me: It was supposed to come out on Tuesday.

Guy: Just because you heard it on the radio doesn't mean it's a single.

Me: *Looks at him annoyed, very annoyed as a matter of fact* No, I'm sure they're releasing a single.

Gal (his coworker): Here it is.

Guy: We'll have it in next week.

Me: (Inside my head) Asshole.

So thus I've returned home with no CD once again. Damn Damn Damn. I should've just ordered the stupid thing off of Amazon. UGH.

"The killer, the girl, and the cop all have split-personalities! They're all the same person! Isn't that fucked up?"

Whew! Long day!

I worked today from 10 - 7! Ughhhhhhhhhhhh...

Afterwards I went to Sonic Boom records which was cool. I got the Blood Brothers CD Burn Piano Island Burn and some Sigur Ros on vinyl. Woohoo. I got ( ) and the single from that album also. I'm listening to the B-Sides right now which are very very soothing.

Originally I had gone there to find the new Radiohead single but they haven't gotten their shipment yet. What the hell!? I can't find the damn thing anywhere... UGH!

I watched Adpatation again. Here's the verdict:

The second half works. It's funny and very enjoyable. It's just not the direction I would have preferred the film to have gone. Had they done away with the whole Charlie Kaufman writing the movie we're watching thing and I would have enjoyed it more. Sure the idea is clever as hell and it worked really well, but I think the film had so much more going for it in other aspects that it could have done without the crazy ending and all that cleverness.

I guess this is just because what I was most attached to at the beginning of the film was the Meryl Streep character and her desire to have a passion for something, etc. There were some really great parts with that. Laroche's speech about the insects and plants making love, Kaufman looking at the people around him describing them, Streep's character at dinner thinking to herself, etc. I felt like all that was lost at the end of the movie in favor of satire.

I love the movie and I hate criticizing it, but I would have preferred to see it take another less wild direction... but what do I know... I'm not Charlie Kaufman...

I did it. I finally

I did it. I finally did it. I finished a Burrito Grande at Gorditos! Woohoo!

Jealousy is my Middle Name was all right, not bad, but a little bit too slow.

I forgot to mention this

I forgot to mention this yesterday!

I was on the ateaseweb.com messageboard, which is a Radiohead thing, and I got to talk to Chris O'Rielly. He's a classical pianist who has a weekly show on National Public Radio. He's also obsessed with Radiohead to the point that he has a new album coming out called "True Love Waits" which are all just Radiohead covers done on the piano (they sound really cool). He played at Columbia University late last year and I missed it so I was hoping to see him sometime in the future.

Anyway there was a really really long thread comparing Radiohead and other bands to classical musicians and comparing them in complexity, etc. It was really long and a lot of it just went straight over my head since I'm not very well versed in the realm of classical music, at least not to the level that some of these people were.

Eventually I was able to talk to him though to find out if he was going to be in NY anytime soon, unfortunately he is, but when I'm not there. He is going to be in Tacoma also, when I'm not here. I warned him about Tacoma and he already knew, he told me that the last time he was in Tacoma he made a quick escape to Seattle (a city he "loves to distraction").

Totally cool guy, fun to talk to.

Plans for today:

First film I'm seeing of the film festival! Yay, it's a Korean film called Jealousy Is My Middle Name, hopefully it'll be good...

"I think she's the saddest girl to ever hold a martini..."

i just registered for this thing called friendster because I was told to...

you all should too...

http://www.friendster.com and be sure to add me as a friend

in other news. i finally bought my tickets for the seattle film festival today and ended up spending $180 dollars. I also made some bids in the silent auction they're having. Poland has the most incredible movie posters I've ever seen, they're all paintings that local artists do for the films and they just look amazing. I bid $170 each on Un Chien Andalou and Breaking the Waves, I doubt I'll win either of them, but if I did that would be awesome.

http://www.musicman.com/mp/polish/pol.html

the above link will show you some of them, I think they're SO COOL!

Just woke up from attempting to watch Vanilla Sky...

How do you make a movie with Radiohead and Sigur Ros on the soundtrack and even include Radiohead references in the film and bore the hell out of me? By making Vanilla Sky. UGH.

Wow lots of stuff to

Wow lots of stuff to write about!

First of all: Sasquatch was lots of fun. I'll try to streamline what I write about it.

Death Cab for Cutie = totally cool.

Modest Mouse: I like their music, but their fans are the most annoying people in the entire universe. Never in my life have I ever seen a larger gathering of stupid annoying people.

Jurassic Five = awesome. Their DJs did some really cool stuff too.

The Flaming Lips = ROCK ASS. Their show was hilarious. Lots of people on stage in animal costumes dancing (including Chris Walla and Ben Gibbard) and gigantic balloons filled with confetti. Wayne Coyne (the lead singer) also sang happy birthday to some people while smearing fake blood on his face. The best part of their set though was watching Chris Walla doing the Peanut's christmas special dance with the intensity of an overly hyper 3rd grader while dressed up as a bunny.

Coldplay was great also, but throughout their set all I could think of was getting something to drink. I had been standing in about a 2x2 area from 4 until 11. My legs were in a lot of pain and I was very thirsty. Had I wanted to get a drink I wouldn't have been able to make my way out.

The Gorge is such an awesome venue, it's too bad it's so damn far away.

On the way back we saw the Radiohead Hail to the Thief van on the freeway and pulled up next to them and yelled at them to throw us CDs because it looked like they had the There There single on the dashboard. Turns out they didn't but we kept following them anyway just incase. Eventually the two people driving it (two women) got really scared and started trying to lose us. Only then did we realize that we were probably really scaring them. Oops...

I wish I was on the Radiohead street team. Boo. I'd like to say that if I was I would've stopped for me and my friends, unlike those two people, but then again it's understandable that they would be afraid of a bunch of rabid Radiohead fans...

I went to Red Robin today for Kenny's birthday. Had lots of strawberry lemonade with lots of extra strawberries. Mmm, but I've eaten way too much today and am so full.

Hmmm, there's a lot more to write about but I desperately need to take a shower. Bye.

"It's like a battle between motors and horses, like technology vs. horse."

Hmmm... Adaptation... it started off really really good it ended just good. I had read that the last third was disappointing and what I read was right. I have to go to bed so I won't write about it, but the movie is great regardless of the unfortunate second half.

There's a great little monologue that a guy gives about flowers and insects and stuff. It's about going after what you desire and your heart being the only barometer you can trust or whatnot. Kinda cheesy beautiful. The film seems to really believe in the idea and that makes it work. It was sequences like this in the beginning and of course the great portrayal of what it's like trying to write a screen play (frustrating as all hell) that made the first half so incredible.

Can't say the same about the second half, which isn't bad, but doesn't live up to the first.

Really good stuff. I think The Pianist and Far From Heaven were better, but for the first half I was thinking that Adaptation might be my favorite from 2002, too bad. 8/10

I just started watching Adaptation,

I just started watching Adaptation, but I have to go to work and won't be able to finish it! DOH! I'll start it over when I get back home. Anyway, what I've seen thus far is just incredible. The first 40 minutes are really really really good, unfortunately from what I hear, it falls apart near the end, but I'll judge for myself later tonight. Anyway, so far it's sooooooo good. Yep.

Hell yeah! Matthew Barney's "The

Hell yeah! Matthew Barney's "The Cremaster Cycle" is playing at the Varisty from July 11th - 24th! The Guggenheim Museum in NY were showing these and I missed them and was really bummed out, I guess the Varsity will have to do.

http://www.cremaster.net

from what I hear it's really incredible stuff.

Whoa, rumor has it that

Whoa, rumor has it that Stephen Malkamus and the Jicks are going to open for Radiohead when they tour the U.S. later this year... that would be so sweet. The frontmen for the two best bands of the 90s (Pavement and Radiohead) on one stage! Whoa! Yeah, pretty cool.

Anyway, work today was all right. I'm not even sure if I have to go tomorrow, hopefully I won't...

This Saturday morning I'm headed to the Gorge for the Sasquatch festival which is going to be cool (although nowhere near as sweet as the Field Day festival in NY that I'm going to miss *sigh*)

Bed time...

Moving was canceled so I'm

Moving was canceled so I'm watching Annika Sorenstam tee it up with the dudes, I'll watch Adaptation afterwards.

3:17pm... I've been at work

3:17pm... I've been at work since 12:30 and I have 2 hours and 43 minutes left to go... I'm on a break right now...

I remember a lot more then I thought I would so the first day hasn't been too bad although the music is still bad. I'm making a mix tape for next time I come into work. It'll make the day go by so much faster.

Oooh... the Beauty and the Beast song is playing. Joy.

After work I'm going to Scarecrow video to return some stuff then going home. I can't wait.

I had a Twin Peaks dream last night! It was awesome, I was in the town although it looked nothing like the real town, but whatever. It was cool, everyone in the town was all depressed over Laura Palmers murder and I was just like "this is cool."

Okay, I have to go back to work. Peace.

"Wear a priest outfit to the door; often times an Italian criminal will not mess with a priest"

Today I played more guitar and now my fingers are actually hurting...

My box of stuff that I had shipped via UPS finally arrived. Everything was intact except one cup which had a broken handle. Damnit! Oh well... my camera was in that box and I was very happy to be reunited with it although it jammed half way into my roll of t-max 400 film. GRRRRR! I'm getting a new camera soon, a spiffy Nikon, werd.

I've got a job for the first week of June. I'm painting some building and getting paid $500 to do it. Tite.

Tomorrow I start my job at my dad's store. I did this last year too and I loathe it, but the pay is good and it's a quick job as opposed to going around searching for someone who will hire someone who's taking a 4 week vacation to go to Korea and leaving at the end of August for school. Work, hurray... ugh...

I went to the golf range for the first time in a long time today. Over nine months to be exact. It went pretty well. My 9 iron was slicing at first, but it was soon resolved with help from my dad and my 7 iron and SW were being very good to me. My drives were also working very well. It was a very pleasant return to the sport that I once held so close to my heart.

SW - 100 yd
9-iron - 150yd
7-iron - 175yd
4-Wood - 240yd
Driver - 280yd

My hands hurt though...

Sasquatch festival is this Saturday, it's going to rock some serious ass.

Updated to my website have been made, check it out, it should load much faster now. http://www.mynameisben.com

I've been giving some of my friends email addresses on my website... I have 246 more that I can give out... It's be pretty damn cool to have 248 people with mynameisben.com email addresses although that would probably result in lots of bandwidth being used up by email, but I get 30gb a month so it should be all right... If anybody wants an email addresses email me at ben@mynameisben.com with a 3,000 word essay on why you deserve the email address. Cool.

I was just on the phone for an hour and forty one minutes. Whoa.

I'm hungry and there's left over Thai Food downstairs... to eat or not to eat... I'll just deal with the hunger and enjoy it in the morning. I better go to bed quickly so that tomorrow will arrive faster. I only got three hours of sleep last night anyway (I woke up at seven! UGH!) because I had to get up for breakfast.

New Radiohead Soon New Radiohead Soon New Radiohead Soon Tite Tite Tite

Note to people who see me in person... should I ever start using "tite" on a regular basis in regular conversation: punch me in the face. Really hard.

Note to self and anyone else reading this who goes to NYU: There's a sequel to Spinal Tap which probably isn't very good, but needs to be seen anyway. Rent it next year.

So tired... I'm off to bed. Peace out doggs.

Nutella on toast, Mmmmmm...

I watched the 2nd installment of the Decalogue last night. Very good, although not as good as the first. Tonight I'm going to try to watch 2 more since I need to get through six by Thursday.

Hahahaha! The video for the new Jewel song "Intuition" is really funny although very scary at the same time...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Okay... so that quote is taken horribly out of context... but still, even in the correct context it's still funny!

In other news. I was recently complaining to a friend about how my nose was getting dry due to tissue paper that just wasn't getting the job done (this was during my cold). Well, she recommended that I try Puffs Facial Tissue with Lotion containing Aloe and vitamin E. Well, I was at Target and sure enough I saw some and picked it up and used it immediately when I got home. Greatest nose blowing experience of my life, period.

The Decalogue

I just watched the first of ten parts in Kieslowski's "The Decalogue." It's a miniseries that aired in France that's a series of ten one hour segments that are loosely based on the ten commandments.

The first one was incredibly depressing and was also one of the most though provoking films I've seen in a very long time. The films are packed full of moral issues that aren't easily answered, but are beautifully brought to the audience's attention by the filmmaker. As Roger Ebert said: "These are not simplistic illustrations of the rules, but stories that involve real people in the complexities of real problems."

It's late and I'm not articulate enough in this state of mind to type anything about the first piece I just saw that would be even remotely profound or intelligible. As I progress through the series I'll try to bring things up as I think of them. Anyway, the first part was beautifully made with great music and an awesome performance from a child actor. Nine more to go.

waiting for Hail to The

waiting for Hail to The Thief to finish downloading... must burn to CD before Nyquil defeats me... zzzzzzz...

"You're all man to me! All man..."

I just finished watching Todd Haynes' Far From Heaven and am very impressed. The film is a modern take on the melodramas of the fifties, most notably Douglas Sirk whose All That Heaven Allows is heavily borrowed from. The film has a look and feel that is very very fifties.

The story is banal in the most melodramatic of manners, but keeps you interested especially because of the interesting characters and great performances, especially by Dennis Quaid and Julliane Moore.

The Music is great and fits perfectly.

The real star of the film though is the cinematographer, Edward Lachman, and the art direction of the film. It's absolutely gorgeous to look at just like the Sirkian melodramas of the fifties. The color choices are all very specific and beautifully planned out. They use lots of complimentary colors (especially Red and Green or Blue and Orange being the two most often used in this film) to great effect. Everything is meticulously planned out and executed, the costumes, lighting, set design, it's incredible!!! Everything our professor at school raved about when lecturing us on Sirk's films is beautifully rendered here in Haynes' work. I wasn't a big fan of Sirk's film, but I thought Far From Heaven was great. (8/10)

Hmmm... Kind of makes me wonder, a great film like this I give an 8 and I gave Minority Report a 7... I think I'm going to go back and change my previous vote to a 6...

I just woke up from

I just woke up from the craziest dream.

I went to a Godspeed! You Black Emperor concert and they were supposed to have a special guest who was going to be doing vocals to their music so i was in the front row anxiously waiting. The music started behind a black curtain and we were all straining to see who was behind it when suddenly Woody Allen pops out and starts doing hardcore type vocals! It was insane! Then he stuck a silver alarm clock in his mouth and screamed in my face! It was totally awesome!!! If only it wasn't a dream...

May 16, 2003

MURDER!!!

So I finally saw Minority Report today since my brother had rented it. I had been told by countless people that I "HAVE TO SEE IT!" and just as many people have told me that I should avoid it like the plague. Well, it was sitting in the DVD player so I figured what the heck, I promised Ian I'd watch it anyway so I did.

Um...

The premise for the movie was great of course, Philip K. Dick (the brains behind Blade Runner) was the guy who had written the original short story the film was based on. The story was intriguing enough that it kept my attention throughout, although I did fall asleep in the middle for about ten minutes...

Now for some random tidbits pertaining to the film.

What really bugs me about sci fi movies is that they're SO cheesy sometimes. This time it was the flying jetpack things and the costumes the police officers had on. Also, what the heck is with all sci fi films which display such incredible technology except that the holograms or videos or whatever they watch never seem to be very sharp. It's always fuzzy or blurry as if the reception is really bad. You'd think with the sort of technology they have they'd be sure that if they were going to project the images in the manner they do the images would be crystal clear as well. Ugh.

Steven Spielberg should've just kept the film dark instead of trying to lighten it up with little playful moments such as when the Tom Cruise drops the eyeballs and has to chase them down as they roll away or the guy making the joke about the dirty thoughts about his cousin, etc. They're not funny and they only make the movie longer... which brings me to another point... The movie was TOO LONG! It was two hours and twenty minutes or so, ugh! Had he cut it down to around two hours and maybe even a little shorter it would've been much better.

Blah, I don't feel like writing anymore about the movie, I don't like Spielberg...

Wait, one more thing, the ending was sappy in a typical Spielberg fashion.

Overall, the story was really cool and it kept me interesting so at the very least the movie was entertaining although it lacked anything that's going to stick with me for more than one night. (7/10) A seven is probably generous... it would've been a 6.5 if Internet Movie Database had given me the option...

Afterwards, I returned that DVD and rented Todd Haynes' Far From Heaven, I'll probably watch that tonight before I go to sleep.

In non movie news: I played my brother in Super Smash Brothers Melee today and didn't lose once. We played at least 10 games too. Booyah.

Ok, I'm out yo.

AGH! The final mixed version

AGH! The final mixed version of the new Radiohead album was leaked today! Downloading...!!!

The boys are back in town!

I'm home! Whew! The flight was nice and quick, but I have a cold right now so it sucked. I read two issues of the New Yorker and a special tribute issue to Conrad Hall by American Cinematographer.

Last night was spent watching David Lynch's short films (Good) a Japanese film called Versus (Really violent but boring... didn't even finish it) and No Retreat No Surrender (Good) again. That movie rocks so much ass. A couple days ago I watched the sequel to it... it does not rock ass.

The rest of the night was spent talking to Lee and preventing her from falling asleep. I stayed up the whole night so that I could sleep well on the plane. Of course the plan was all foiled when I fell asleep a little after noon after saying my goodbye to Leonard :( anyway, yeah, I have a cold so I was tired and I conked out in my room. I woke up later and got ready to leave got some help from some friends and made my way out and said my goodbyes. The taxi trip to the airport took an hour. Ugh! I made it back safely incase you didn't gather that already.

It's so weird being back home, especially the thought that I won't be going back to NY for 3 1/2 months... *sigh* Oh well! It's nice to be home! If only this damn cold would go away, then i can start enjoying myself.

All my goods made it back home safe... so far... my camera is in the box that should be arriving this week via UPS... my camcorder, light meter, and laptop all made it here in one piece. *crosses fingers*

Stuffy nose... I need kleenex. I'm out. Peace.

We've got Armadillos in our trousers. It's really quite frightening.

Yesterday I watched 5 episodes of Twin Peaks, including the one where Laura Palmer's killer is revealed, and I also went to a midnight screening of This is Spinal Tap!!! I haven't laughed that hard watching a movie for a long time.

Today I went to central park.

Rented the next tape of Twin peaks will probably watch a couple episodes tonight, I'm also supposed to watch George Washington tonight with a friend.

I'm tired. I've packed most of my stuff. I'm tired. I could write so much more, but I don't feel like it. Peace.

I've passed it onto the band with the other entries, just incase it's something to do with my machine. Are you sure its PAL? if it isn't the band probably have access to a machine that can play US tapes so don't worry too much. What do you think?"

www.mynameisben.com

My website has reached a point where I can finally start asking people to visit it without having to include disclaimers about broken links and lack of content. BOOYAH!

EVERYBODY VISIT THIS WEBSITE ---> http://www.mynameisben.com

Plans for tomorrow:

I need a light meter and supposedly there's a camera store called b&h uptown that's having some sort of sale. They have a Sekonic one there that's $150 which is a pretty good deal. It's not the best one on the market, but it should do for now. They have a nicer $400 one that my dad said I could get, but I really don't need it right now and I'd feel bad spending his money to get it. I'll work over the summer and get it myself.

Tomorrow I think I'm also going to go to the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) since I haven't been there yet and would like to go before I leave. I'm excited.

I'm also going to watch the first two episodes of the second season of Twin Peaks tomorrow and maybe watch No Retreat No Surrender 2, which finally arrived today, if I have time.

I also need to study for my language of film final which is at 2 on Friday. I thought it was going to be easy, but now I'm hearing it's going to be killer. Hmmm... I'm scared... kind of...

Friday night is going to rock the house. Landmark's Sunshine Cinema is having a midnight screening of This is Spinal Tap!!! AGH! The funniest movie ever! It's going to be so great with a big crowd. I can't wait. I really want to get one of those skeleton T-shirts. One that would serve as an exact replica of my insides.

Leonard and I built a fort in our room and I would take pictures of it, but it's way to big. It pretty much takes up the entire room. I tried to take photos, but my camera couldn't contain it all.

I think I'm done writing for now. Visit my website and tell all your friends to visit it as well! Peace.

I'm slowly learning Flash 5.0 I learned how to make a button that lights up when you click it. Woohoo!

My new website is coming along...

I found a host for it and the website should be up by the end of this week. I even get 250 ____@mynameisben.com email addresses! Cool! Maybe I'll start selling them to people...

Today I was walking to class and changed my mind and got my haircut instead.

Deftones are playing right across the street today. it's a secret show. This is Leonard's favorite band and he's been freaking out the past week or so... He's in line right now, Francis James and I are going later. I'm mostly going to watch Leonard go nuts, although one song from their new album is really growing on me as well.

No class until Friday now! And that's just my Language of Film final.... agh!

Yale
You're second best, and you know it. Still, those
riding the crimson wave may be slightly
smarter, slightly more prestigious, but you
know you're hipper. I mean, you're not hip --
your a nerd, for fuck's sake -- but you're
hipper.

Coming Soon...

Coming Soon...

"I'll cash your check tomorrow..."

Whew! My project went pretty well and my Friday was good. Francis had a lot of declining dollars left on his meal plan so we went to the Violet Cafe to eat. I ate way too much, but it was good. Thank you again Francis.

The sound projects were generally pretty good. A couple brilliant moments, a couple not so brilliant moments. Overall, lots of fun to listen to.

I watched the pilot for Twin Peaks again... that's twice in a week now... I want to watch season two but I have to wait for various people to catch up...

NYU is the nation's most fashionable university... I feel so inadequete...

"So much alike my ass!"

WHEW!

I used 6/14 of my 14 hour editing session. That means it took me 6 hours.

I'm pretty happy with it, I would have liked to have made it longer and added more dialogue between Jack and Jill, but it was all done in one recording session and I didn't have the time to hold a second one.

It's not actually 7 minutes long. There's lots of silence at the end of it.

Random Stuff I stumbled across while surfing the web

"Us on hard drugs? That would be horrible. We'd probably end up sounding like Bryan Adams. My girlfriend has this quote in her sketchbook: Remain orderly in your life so you can be free and chaotic in your work. I think basically you lose it when you destroy your brain or destroy yourself emotionally or burn yourself up."
