I'm here in Pucheon on
I'm here in Pucheon on Day three of the PiFan film festival.
Yesterday I watched five movies and today I saw three. Yesterday I saw a short film by a Canadian director named Guy Maddin called The Heart of the World. It was a mixture of German expressionism and Soviet montage and was one of the coolest things that I've seen in a very long time. It was originally comissioned for the Toronto Film Festival and was being screened here as part of a series of films by Maddin.
The second film I saw was Dracula: Pages From a Virgin's Diary, once again this was a mixture of expressionism and montage with a dose of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet thrown in. This was also a Guy Maddin film and was also very entertaining. In this screening Godfrey Reggio, director of the Qatsi trilogy, was sitting right in front of me.
Reggio's films are also being screened here and over the last three days I've seen all of those too. Koyanisqatsi, Powwaqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi are all film that involve no plot or dialogue and instead are just a series of images coupled with an incredible score by Philip Glass. The films are great and Reggio was there to do a Q&A after each one. During the screening of the last one he was actually sitting a couple seats to my left, with only one person (who kept falling asleep) in between us.
Another film I saw was called Hollywood North and was also very entertaining.
I also saw two more Guy Maddin film: Twilight of the Ice Nymphs and Careful. While they were interesting visually, they got old fast. Whoever thought watching movies could be so tiring... I'm exhausted. Four more tomorrow...
